The mod team is not your personal super-downvote squad. We aren't removing comments simply because they hold opinions you disagree with, so whomever is going through this thread reporting every. single. comment. that didn't like the trailer can stop now, because you're simply wasting everyone's time.

We've approved 60+ comments out of this thread and we have better things to be doing. Mass-reporting perfectly acceptable comments don't get them removed, it gets actual rule-breaking content approved because it gets lost in the noise.

It’s crazy that this a very similar trailer leaked like 6 months ago. Or a year idk. Where did (my sense of) the time go…

23

u/CallerOfElse 3d ago

I’ve been hollow so long.....

110

u/FKDotFitzgerald 3d ago

It wasn’t this trailer.

72

u/Surfacelfx 3d ago

Some parts of the leaked trailer were most definitely in this one

39

u/ericbyo 3d ago

Yeah, the giants pulling the thing and some horse gameplay were the same

20

u/tcnewstream 3d ago

Correct, it looks like that leak was a very early version of this trailer. It looks so much better!

What if they're the same?

Maybe Elden Ring is long before/after Souls, but still the same world. Miyazaki may be pulling a sneaky on us.

19

u/AntaresDaha 3d ago

It's not completely out of the question that the big 3 (DS, BB, Sekiro) share a universe. There are some strong hints of blood healing in foreign lands in Sekiro, maybe Elden Ring will tie some of it together and maybe that is not at all what Miyazaki intends to do and Elden Ring will just be a marvelous FromSoft take on Nordic mythology, who knows.

Can't wait to not be able to beat another souls game!

I suck at them, but I love them anyway and this one looks stunning. Even more than I imagined. The character designs are unbelievable. The team outdid themselves.

57

u/Cast-Iron_Man 3d ago

It's ok I play the shit out of them and beat them exactly once. There's this whole community based on playing over and over again in ng+ but not for me. I love them but I just can't convince myself to do it all again lol so stressful. I'll play halfway through a few times where I can basically memorize the first few levels but I never have motivation to pass those difficulty walls again.

48

u/metamet 3d ago

As someone who does just that, the subsequent playthroughs are way less stressful. You know where you're going, what to look out for, and how to beat the bosses.

First run is a bigger sense of discovery and tension. Second feels more like an action RPG.

25

u/uncledungus 3d ago

3rd feels like you're god, 4th you get tripped up on the second boss for an hour for some reason but then back to feeling godly

5

u/CrimsonNova22 3d ago edited 3d ago

10

u/chillinwithmoes 3d ago

I've played all of them, and beat none of them. I appreciate what great games they are but I always, always, always hit a point where I just don't have the dedication to power through.

5

u/early_morning_mike 3d ago

This is me. I think the fact that I have to run back to the boss each time he stomps me adds to the pain of having to do it again. Especially where one wrong move on the way back ends up with you being dead :D.

3

u/AmaroWolfwood 3d ago

You gotta stop and grind out some levels, then look up a good weapon for whatever build you ended up on and go get it. My first time playing, I played straight through and ended up at a point where I was just getting one shoted by trash and almost gave up because it was too stressful to keep getting pounded. But going back to an area that gives decent souls and grinding for an hour or two got me way tougher and managed to take a few hits, making the fights so much more manageable.

4

u/Haytaytay 3d ago

It's always drastically easier on your second playthrough, since now you know what you're doing and how to build your character.

There's a lot of catharsis in pulverizing the bosses that terrorized you on the first run.

Give this build a shot - https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/8m6n19/the_best_pve_build_in_dark_souls_become_a_cleric/ - I had the same attitude as you. It even took me 20 hours at the gargoyle boss on my first attempt before I gave up. Then I got to it in 5 hours on my first completed run, then an hour on my second completed run. Now Im halfway through Nioh.

6

u/Fluffy_data_doges 3d ago

The last time I played it, I did a great club playthrough. It was honestly the easiest playthrough I have had on a souls game. That weapon takes huge chunks of health from every enemy.

Which coming from someone with a good 1200 hours in Souls games that’s just fine to me

108

u/whatisupworld 3d ago

Yeah, looks like they’ve added more fluid movements to it, similar to Sekiro. But I’m not complaining at all. I love DS3. I was hoping Elden Ring looked like Dark souls. Cannot wait for this game.

38

u/PinsNneedles 3d ago

Dude if they mix the dex of dark souls with Sekiro’s combat and Bloodborne’s fluidity… could you imagine?

16

u/BearCalledWinnie 3d ago

On their website they say that you explore and learn new skills, and if you look really carefully at the animations in the trailer you can see reposts/counters using two handed weapons after blocking, jumping for dodging, and dodges that aren't rolls but side steps. Also, there is the sneaking. I honestly think they will include a skill system somewhat like sekiro, while keeping the different weapons, and magic.

u/dfla01 3d ago edited 3d ago

What game would you suggest to start with from someone that hadn’t played a second of any of them? I have Bloodborne but unsure whether to start with Dark Souls or Demon’s Souls

Edit: Well damn I think I was recommended literally every single one at least once lmao. Thanks everyone, I’ll probably give bloodborne a go first seeing as I’ve already got it, then possibly Demon’s Souls if it ever goes on a decent sale

70

u/ShreddedKyloRen 3d ago

Bloodborne is fantastic and my favorite. But, the starting area can feel brutal to the uninitiated. Either Dark Souls Remastered or Demon’s Souls Remake are fantastic entry points, combat is a little slow and methodical compared to Bloodborne, DS3 and Sekiro.

49

u/Served_In_Bleach 3d ago

But, the starting area can feel brutal to the uninitiated.

Ah so it wasn't just me. Maybe I'll go back

19

u/DrPoopEsq 3d ago

I feel like it's not only difficult for combat but way more difficult to figure out where you are going. The first area is really cool but not the easiest thing to drop in to this type of game.

17

u/BAM2K_Youtube 3d ago

As someone who was in that position once, just use a guide to start. It'll help you get past the first few areas and gain better understanding of mechanics and how the enemies behave. I basically played DS3 and bloodborne alongside guides and I enjoyed them way more because I actually knew what to do (instead of just constantly dying and being lost).

Then I jumped into Demons Souls and didn't need a guide at all.

The hardest Souls game is the first one you play. The rest are much easier. Except Sekiro. Fuck that game.

The Souls series has made me an expert in methodically searching levels. I have my own method and everything.

3

u/Dodgy_Past 3d ago

Work your way around the edges of the level first then spiral into the center?

→ More replies

11

u/Dr_PuddinPop 3d ago

It also sucks because if you get stuck too long it’s easy to run out of blood vials, which is arguably one of the most frustrating mechanics in the game.

Once you get a little farther in the game you can make do with just buying some with leftover echos anytime you go to the dream.

I mean until the dlc, I ran out again on a certain boss.

The bloodborne starting area is the most brutal area of any of the 6 games IMO. You can't even level up right away.

yeah, the first area was absolutely brutal - especially for being my first soulsborne game. though now looking back it’s quite easy.

18

u/BiancoFuji599XX 3d ago edited 3d ago

I knew they were going to give it some dark souls vibes so I wasn’t surprised, but I felt just a smidge disappointed with how samey it looked. I think it’s the color palette they use that makes it feel samey. Don’t get me wrong I love the art though.

Nonetheless, I was still hyped as hell watching the trailer and I have faith it’s going to be epic and I’m going to love it. I will definitely be purchasing it.

If it has some new epic magic spells, a new twist on the parry system, and a new take on the co-op system, I will be happy even if it feels samey.

Edit: the new open world looking areas def look refreshing and new though.

91

Ghost of Tsushima had awesome horses imo. It feels less like a horse and more of an extension of your character since it seemed like you were controlling the horse directly rather than controlling your character controlling the horse if that makes sense.

I am assuming (read: hoping) that riding a horse is entirely optional. But it makes sense due to the areas being so far apart. Plus, you can apparently just throw some fairy dust or whatever and your horse appears, so that seems convenient.

These fuckers ALWAYS come to the table with just jaw dropping, incredibly creative design. I love them so much.

13

u/Z0idberg_MD 3d ago

They vibe. Like you feel like you’re in a horrible space when playing. Part of it is visuals but it’s also presentation.

39

u/IanMazgelis 3d ago

And honestly, for the target platform, this is still a good looking game. It's a PlayStation 4 game. It has to run decently on hardware from 2013. It just isn't fair to compare this to the Demon's Souls remake or the new Ratchet and Clank, you need to look at this and ask how it compares to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games. You could definitely argue it doesn't look as good as some stuff like The Last of Us 2 or Red Dead Redemption 2, but I certainly think you'd be stretching your imagination to say it looks bad.

There's also the benefit that it's virtually guaranteed to be a locked 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5, maybe even at 4K too. I obviously want From Software's next game to target ninth generation hardware, but this one wasn't meant to, and I'm expecting it to look like a game that's made for systems that were available as it was being developed.

3

u/thesirknee 3d ago

Color me surprised that they're still targeting PS4. Good on them for sticking to it.

80

u/tumblingdown3 3d ago

I thought Sekiro looked fantastic graphically, but that's just me.

I think the souls games are great examples of the importance of art direction. Their engine may not have the most fidelity, and they may not have 40 million polygons per character and high quality TAA, or whatever, but their art direction more than makes up for that. I'd far rather the dense gothic architecture of some of the areas of Bloodborne than some big open desert from RDR2.

21

u/Rodr500 3d ago

Yeah sekiro had amazing graphics and even if it didn’t the artwork, colors and scenery would still make it a very beautiful game

10

u/Schwarzengerman 3d ago

I love RDR2 honestly but yeah, their aesthetic style is incredible.

3

u/Valharja 3d ago

Just that they manage to have an art style and graphics that actually makes it easy to see what's going on is a huge plus for me. Loved Demon's Souls remake, and though explosions and fire effect looked extremely good in that game, I don't remember them being that much of a distraction on boss 2-1 and 2-2 in the original From game. Now when Flamelurker slams his fists in the ground the whole damn screen explodes, Flamelurker is burning extra bright, the ground is burning extra bright your damn character is burning extra bright if he has hit you etc

It looks fantastic, but also a lot less clear. Demons's Souls is luckily not too hard to begin with, but if Light Effects is what sends me back to whatever they call a Bonfire in Elden Ring time and time again then those impressive visual effect will start to feel less fun for every attempt :P

173

u/ThaNorth 3d ago

Everyone wants to poo on Fromsofts visuals

77

u/Kelmi 3d ago

I love all dark souls games but I'll openly criticize these graphics. The hair specifically looks like ass and some textures looked aged.

There were also plenty of great looking parts but overall it looks a lot like ps4.

After Demon Souls I was a bit disappointed in the graphics. Doesn't stop my hype at all since the gameplay and atmosphere are million times more important but we can acknowledge the graphics.

46

u/singlefate 3d ago

It looks a lot like ps4 because it was most probably heavily developed on ps4 and moved to ps5 like most games this and next year. I'll take 60fps though.

→ More replies

5

u/No-Plankton4841 3d ago

There is some truth to this... I expected a bit more polish in all honesty. I don't think this looks nearly as good as Sekiro or Bloodborne even.

Some of the worlds looked weirdly barren (unless there is some story reason for that).

If it runs at a solid 60fps on PS5 I'll be happy though.

I play their games and criticizing their graphics is totally valid. I play their games and I care about the graphics. Blind fanboism is stupid. A game can be amazing and still not be great in a particular aspect.

Sekiro has alot of goergous areas though. Judging from the new trailer and with how big the world will be, Elden Ring should look amazing.

I know Miyazaki is very inspired by Berserk and the first 20 seconds reminds me a lot of some things that happen in that series. I love it. The wait is almost over.. 6 months let’s go!

That werewolf knight is just guts/artorias

u/deepfakefuccboi 3d ago

And I fucking love it, especially with Miura’s passing. I wish a good Berserk game was made (Band of the Hawk does not) but honestly this seems close enough lol. Berserk of the Rings.

This trailer exceeded my already high expectations. A open world RPG in the vein of Dark Souls is all I’ve ever wanted since I first played those games! I am beyond excited

u/fresco9 3d ago

wait this is open world? is this confirmed? Only thing I hate about souls games is having to redo the entire level when you die because it gets soooo tedious. open world would eliminate that

85

u/GDsnowcream1324 3d ago

They confirmed open world when the game was announced years ago.

the point of redoing the level is to learn the games mechanics and master them. the difficulty is the point of the game. i think dark souls with like, frequent autosaves would be boring as all hell

7

u/aclockworkabe 3d ago

I agree. I’d be bummed if this game being open world meant this went away. As frustrating as it can be, if dying starts a player completely over it brings a lot of pressure to every move and makes you master gameplay.

Their level design was actually a fresh air from stale open-world games. Having said that, I am excited to see what they do with an open-world setup.

My only issue with this is that it's not Bloodborne 2.

7

u/_Oooooooooooooooooh_ 3d ago

Miyazaki said he's not interested in making a Bloodborne sequel. So i doubt we'll see it.

But Sony did say they had ~24 exclusives in development, and given the succes of Bloodborne, i can only assume they asked From for another exclusive, but gave them free hands to do what they wanted. (similarly to Bloodborne)

iirc Miyazaki said he'd like to make a futuristic souls game as well (or so i heard, from some youtuber, some years ago) and that sounds very good to me.

this will be the game that makes me get a ps5. the 30 fps looks painful in some of the cutscenes. the pc multiplayer scene is awful

If I die before this game is released I'm going to be so pissed.

Let’s get the useless stuff out of the way; Yes, the graphics look slightly out of date.

However, I DO NOT CARE because the game looks sick to me and like it’s going to be fun! At the end of the day all I give a damn about:

1) is the game fun to play

2) is the story any good when it comes to narrative driven games of this genre.

This game looks so fucking cool and it’s such a bummer I suck too much at video games to enjoy it.

4

u/tomdickjerry 3d ago

Wow! Can’t wait to watch other people play this game

5

u/Liv1ngShad0w 3d ago

E3 didn't even begin yet and we already got a top game in our Wish list, that we were all hyped for.

5

u/RolandCollides 3d ago

Man, the Demon’s Souls remake really spoiled a lot of people here. That game was made by Bluepoint, and this is by a different group altogether. I love the visuals in this because it screams DS3, and that game had some awesome aesthetics. I am beyond excited for this!

Wait so this game is souls style ? All this time I was expecting a 3rd person action RPG in a Lord of the ring/game of thrones style word lol.

Still looks great but I never played the souls game

looking forward to the game because of the talent involved, but felt like i was looking at a dark souls/bloodborne greatest hits collection. if you said it was dark souls 4 and the big new thing was slightly larger levels and you have a steed this is pretty much what it would look like

Is it me or this game looks worse than Demon’s Souls remake? As a fan of Souls games I can recognize all the animations, I didn’t feel anything new coming from this game.
