It made me laugh when one of them said “no thank you” in the beginning to his behavior. Literally something I say to my preschool students when they do something that they’re not supposed to.

I used to follow this channel on YouTube called "treedicks".

It was basically this guy who worked as a contractor in the London, ON area, just filming everything in his day to day life. No real structure of any kind to it. It was just like seeing this guy's life through his eyes. But eventually it became like a show to me. I got to know him and the other characters and became interested in their story arcs, and there was even a major twist in the plot toward the end of the videos made for that channel. But it all happened organically and authentically.

But, these guys were just regular old blue collar guys. Drug problems, poverty, trouble with the law. Reminded me of a lot of people I know in the US. Even though they weren't very far at all from Toronto, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in North America.

3k

It’s the people who want everyone and government to stay out of their business and not tell them what to do who usually are the ones who get up in other people’s business and tell them what to do.

1k

u/DrillWormBazookaMan 3d ago

That's what fucking gets me to be honest. My father is a homophobic racist Trump supporting Qanon type. Getting in discussions with him is typically fruitless because on top of that he has a massive anger issue so it just turns into a screaming match. He thinks I love communism and socialism (lol) and when I asked him what his definition of communism was he said "when the government controls every aspect of your life."

You mean like smoking marijuana? Or before it was passed, being able to marry someone of the same sex? What about porn, I don’t see nearly as many democrats trying to censor or outlaw pornography by comparison of the right. Prostitution? Abortion? Assisted suicide? The democrats aren't heros in these aspects either but compare my priorities versus someone like my fathers. I'm for the right to do all of that stuff I mentioned whereas the party he supports often actively tries to restrict those rights. So how can you even fucking sit there and crow about "muh communism" when the very people you're voting for are the biggest whiney baby prudes on the planet and refuse to allow anything fun or necessary for our own wellbeing.

Again the dems suck in their own ways but you can't tell me that you would have better luck getting all the things I mentioned passed with a republican majority in government. They would actively stonewall most of it.

u/stormyclouds69 3d ago edited 3d ago

Well I think LBJ called it. If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.

Lyndon B. Johnson

Edit: since this got bigger than expected.yes I know he was racist. Yes I know he wasn't for civil rights. This is a quote relevant to the comment I originally replied to and Nothing more.

182

u/ravenwillowofbimbery 3d ago

Yes. And that came from a man with racist tendencies of his own.

148

u/stormyclouds69 3d ago

Honestly i think that's part of the reason the quote sticks with me.

193

u/EfB9e9bE 3d ago

LBJ was racist. He knew he was racist and he did his best to address the problems caused by racism. That is why he's one of my favorite American presidents. We can't help learning the crap we're taught during childhood. We can work to improve the world and we can maybe work to change ourselves.

39

u/_Bey0nd__ 3d ago

Just summed up why he’s my favorite president as well.

58

u/Wayyd 3d ago

Really? He's my favorite cause he regularly hung dong.

35

u/kittykatmeowow 3d ago

And another thing - the crotch, down where your nuts hang - is always a little too tight, so when you make them up, give me an inch that I can let out there, uh because they cut me, it's just like riding a wire fence. See if you can't leave me an inch from where the zipper (burps) ends, round, under my, back to my bunghole, so I can let it out there if I need to.

Are we brothers? Sounds exactly like my dad. We don’t talk much anymore.

It is a shame to grow up in a house of people you realize as an adult were generally not good people. I mean racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic.. all the bad adjectives. And yeah, add a healthy helping of rage on top of that shit sandwich.

There are so many Americans like this. It is exhausting to share oxygen with people like this. It is one of the reason I’m planning to leave the country as soon as possible. I’m just tired of fighting all the time with people with backwards value systems.

34

u/Rhynosaurus 3d ago

My dad grew up in WV, my mom in Chicago, they met it college. My grandparents on my dad's side were vile, prejudice people; not so much on my mom's side, they grew up in a white neighborhood but also experienced people from diff ethnicities, religions, etc all the time. They met in the late 60s while everything was going on in that era. Ended up moving to Chicago for work, and to be closer to her parents, and away from his. He's a pretty liberal guy now but his younger brother stayed behind and took care of his aging parents. It took all till both of them to die for him to come out of the closet. My dad was flabbergasted he wasted the prime of his life taking care of people that hated him for his sexuality. He kept asking why he didnt come stay with them, get away, live his life. He said he just felt an obligation because my dad and aunt (his sister) moved far away. He said he contemplated suicide more than a few times; said he drove up to Columbus, Ohio and had unprotected sex cause he didnt care.

He's in his 60s now, in a long term, committed relationship so it worked out but I always felt bad for the guy.

I feel your pain man. It sucks too because I'm bisexual. Grew up listening to him call for the gays to be executed. My mother once told me I "couldn't bring a black girl home" I shit you fucking not. I hope you can try to bridge the gap with your family. It's disheartening on so many levels but we aren't alone in this.

I feel sorry for my parents but I genuinely don't know what to do. It's hard to remain patient with them. I try to ask them where they get their beliefs from, why they hold them. Why do you trust an orange turd with a bad haircut from Manhattan over scientists who have studied X for their entire lives. Finding sources for their claims. It typically doesn't seem to do much to persuade them, only frustrate them. When you're up against "because I'm 50 years old and have lived it" as the justification for hating black people you aren't dealing with anyone arguing in good faith. He knows he's wrong he just wants to hate. Maybe to mask his own insecurities? Only he will know.

Sorry for the rant but one more thing I genuinely think he's fucking gay. No one is that concerned about the sex lives of other people unless you're purely projecting. And it saddens me because if he is gay, he was sucked into this toxic mindset my grandfather held and had to hide himself in pure shame and self loathing for years. I know the feeling, and if he's going through that I just want him to get the help he needs. I just want to have a genuine conversation with my father without this bullshit animosity.

28

u/gmartin4414 3d ago

You’re not alone. I know so many parents similar to this, and it’s sad. It’s so hard to stay patient and have a conversation with them, much less when they’re enraged.

I too hated myself for being bisexual and vowed I’d never tell a soul, and to see that self-loathing possibly happen to someone for 50 years is terrible. All because of a few wealthy elites spreading misinformation.

Sometimes I’m grateful to be brought up in a home like that so I can never treat my children like that. I hope you can bridge the gap to your family, although it’s not a necessity. Remember that we’re not alone and that the next generation can and will be better.

About a decade ago, my dad started showing signs of dementia. He was a hardcore right supporter, against gay marriage (even though I had come out as bisexual), misogynist, etc. I like to think the universe gave him dementia so that I wouldn't have to see him spiral further and further down into the Trump supporter/Q enthusiast rabbit hole -- because he would have. So, it's been a blessing and a curse.

I'm so sorry you've had to go through that. I can only imagine how painful it's been.

58

u/Boy-Abunda 3d ago

It is funny you bring that up. My mom did get dementia.. and her anger and political leanings were the same as my dad’s.

Were being the operative word because she is no longer around.

It is sad to realize that when some people die, the world becomes a better place. One thing I know for certain - I know who I am, and I know who I never want to be.

24

u/gmartin4414 3d ago

as an Australian with a Canadian wife both of our countries have socialism and that's the best thing about it! healthcare, fire, police, and yet we elect our leaders.

why do those types hate socialism? my taxes paying for stuff is good 😟

94

u/I_eat_Chimichangas 3d ago

My parents believe the lie that they will have horrible government healthcare with long waits and horrible service. Basically they think everyone dies horrible deaths in other countries with universal healthcare.

67

u/AktuallyIsDolan 3d ago edited 3d ago

but we also have private healthcare if we want it but if we don't then the universal covers it...

The best hospital I've ever been to is a public one in Australia, it's huge it's nicer than hotels and modern, with concierge on every floor. they employ the elderly to help you find your way and have fast QR code check in with your mobile. it's got an underground train station and nice inside than my house.

The cool thing is that tax's pay for it

it's free, I've been going there for physiotherapy. I walk out the door and don't need to pay anything or talk to anyone after my appointment. they made me a cast for my arm while I sleep and that was free.

right next door is the private hospital but I've never been there even tho I have private healthcare, the public hospital has been amazing!

45

u/I_eat_Chimichangas 3d ago

Oh yeah I try to tell them that. Also they use anecdotal evidence and when I bring up studies they say that is liberal nonsense with biased results. So basically I can’t win. Sources = liberal nonsense and I haven’t been alive enough to match their life experience.

34

u/namom256 3d ago

Lol my grandpa broke his arm on vacation in New Zealand, took an ambulance ride to the hospital, got it set and a cast. Totally free. He even talks about how impressed he was with the level of care there. But they're both firmly firmly against single payer healthcare in the US. Even though they're deep in medical debt from all their other surgeries. It makes no sense. They don't even try to explain their logic anymore

20

u/MalcolmTucker12 3d ago

It's due to propaganda and brainwashing. We might laugh at how blatent it is in North Korea but the USA is just as bad.

18

u/[deleted] 3d ago

That's the most frustrating thing. People REALLY don't understand what proper evidence is. I see it so many times on the right. They bring up related, maybe factual, but IRRELEVANT information.

39

u/NinjaDad_ 3d ago

This, when the clusterfuck of obamacare was in the Senate. There was literally talk show hosts saying that there will be boards appointed to decide who gets healthcare and you will die waiting for treatment.

The Republicans threw a fit so bad that they shut down the federal government for a little while. Thats how much they don't want us to have universal healthcare.

I'll never forget the picture of an old guy with a sign at a protest that said "don't take from my medicare to pay for socialist healthcare" as if that made any sense. You just can't reason with someone that far gone.

6

u/DrydenTech 3d ago

Which I've always thought was hilarious because Insurance companies literally have boards doing exactly that. Republicans so scared of socialism they don't even recognize the death panels they already have.

→ More replies

34

u/Imumybuddy 3d ago

That's not socialism. Socialism isn't when the government does stuff.

There does tend to be far more public funding and subsidization/decommodification of things under socialism, but it's not indicative of it.

Socialism essentially just means worker co-ops, at least, a very large facet of it. Collective ownership of the workplace and the goods/services you produce. Think Mondragon Corp, and other organizations like that becoming the de-facto norm.

I always thought this until something interesting was pointed out to me recently. Saying that homophobes are really just closeted gay people is literally just letting straight people blame homophobia on gay people. It’s like this weird sort of insidious thing that seems to subconsciously happen.

Now it should be said that of course, there are people out there who secretly might have feelings they’re uncomfortable with and it comes out in toxic ways, but a lot of people are just hateful pieces of shit and it has nothing to do with their sexuality. This sort of nuance should be considered before we instinctively blame homophobia on gay people.

I thought the same about these people, but I heard someone explain that this line of reasoning essentially points the finger at it being an internal “gay” problem and not that it could just be a straight person being a bigot.

79

u/tripwire7 3d ago edited 3d ago

"Closeted homophobes" are a real phenomenon, but yeah, some straight people are just super-bigoted.

Explanation for anyone who's not familiar, the "in-the-closet extreme homophobe" thing happens when someone has homophobic attitudes, usually because of the way they were raised, but feels sexually attracted to members of their own sex, mistakenly thinks that everyone has homosexual thoughts and urges, and then becomes enraged at people who are openly gay because they think that homosexuality is a choice and/or they feel that those who are openly gay are leading them into temptation. I actually feel kind of sorry for these people. People who are just bigots, on the other hand, have no excuse.

One of the popular reasons people gave on voting for Trump is that they were sick of losing. They wanted to be winners.

This same mindset drives them to believe that, since Pride Month is widely celebrated and accepted now, they’ve lost.

Essentially what we’re seeing at these anti-pride freak outs are sore losers.

124

u/kefuzz 3d ago

Sadly those losers will only lose even more with trump because he doesnt give a rats ass about the poor

97

u/MisterMasterMario 3d ago

It's not about them winning it's about the "right" people (minorites and lgbtq) suffering

18

u/HertzDonut1001 3d ago

Plus not to join the circlejerk, as long as a lot of Republican voters believe someone they don't like is taking a loss they'll gladly except one themselves. That's why we don't have socialized healthcare yet. Well. One of the reasons. Can't deny both parties have an influence on that argument.

38

u/BuddaMuta 3d ago

More sadly, this isn't true. Currently the right wing of the US is working tireless to just get rid of Democracy as it becomes more and more clear they can't win elections even with our already broken system that favors them.

Seriously, you need to vote in 2022. If you think Georgia bringing Jim Crow back or Jan 6 were bad, it'll get fucking insane if Republicans take the House and Senate. We'll never see a real election again quite frankly.

I once knew a lady who had suffered an ordeal. Our town puts on a huge rodeo every year and she had apparantly had an incident happen to her. In the break room at work she told another employee and I that she would never go back to that carnival, that the people there should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. My and coworker were in our early 20's, the victimized lady was late early 60's. And she couldn't even say what had happened. I liked this lady, we got along well and I had to comfort her and get this story out of her.

Two guys were holding hands. That's all. She said it with a grotesque grimace. She turned her head away as she said it. She probably would have spit and offered up a curse if we were outside.

I couldn't believe her outrage. I don't think I said anything to her after that, and I can't tell you.if I ever spoke another word to her again after that. Some people just can't be around other people without making problems for themselves.

I worked with a lady that made a negative comment about a local rollerskating rink re-opening. It was in a fairly popular area and I thought it would be great for local kids to have some more recreational choices, but she was insistent that no one should EVER take their family there because it was a hot bed, teeming with “sex offenders.”

Her husband was in law enforcement, so I thought that perhaps she had some knowledge about shady stuff going on there, and if that’s why it had been closed down years prior or something. Intrigued, I asked her to elaborate.

Apparently when she took her now college-age daughters there to skate when they were little, they saw a man skating... IN A DRESS! Oh yes, a full grown man wearing a dress, on roller skates!

She explained that she went to the safety associate (that guy in the ref shirt that skates around and makes sure that people are behaving) to tell him that there was a SEXUAL PREDATOR at this establishment and that they needed to have them escorted out by the police. When the rink employee refused, she escalated it to a manager. When the manager refused to evict our man skating sans individual pant legs, my coworker left with her children and refused to ever go back, but made sure that everyone knew never EVER to go there again.

I mean, I’d laugh if it weren’t sad on multiple levels.

Said the homophobe after storming into the middle of a public event trying to tear it down and steal the barriers, swearing in front of children, and forcing his will on people because he doesn't agree with who they love despite this being completely legal and supposedly a free country.

What an absolute piece of shit.

41

u/BuddaMuta 3d ago

You gotta remember how many Boomers view their kids and grand kids as race traitors... or in this case straight-traitors I suppose. It's a pretty scary percentage of that whole demo.

Just not actively being hateful is viewed as a personal attack.

People were driving by, honking, bringing the painters doughnuts and sharing their support, until a man drove by and began hurling racist slurs toward some of the painters, Roberts says. The man drove away, parked and walked back to the crosswalk.

Then he started grabbing the barricades that had been set up just for the safety while we were painting, and he started throwing them and yelling and saying how we were just stupid and destroying the country

Police were called to the scene and the man has been charged with causing a disturbance.

272

u/popny 3d ago

I think he’s blonde and the police lights give the appearance of pink hair dye

116

u/Uncle_Bad_Bad_Touch 3d ago

I agree, I really doubt there are any pink haired cops in cowboy hat areas, not to mention they would be 100% alienated in the force.

61

u/lsmokeyday 3d ago

Haha yaaa. The cops in this town actually kill indigenous folks by driving them out of city limits in the dead of winter and leaving them there. So definitely no pink hair.

10

u/rando-3456 3d ago

Super fucked up.

Cops pick up Indigenous individuals under false pretenses, usually drink, and instead of taking them home or into the station they'll drop them off in the middle of nowhere. Saskatoon is a city, but outskirts are rural, winters are extreme (-30C ish), and people will (and do) freeze to death (think Chicago in the middle of winter) before they can get help / get to a building.

35

u/BuddaMuta 3d ago

The worst part is I think folks will assume you're exaggerating.

No, cops have literally murdered many indigenous people (and presumably members of other vulnerable groups) by assaulting them, driving them out to the middle of nowhere, and leaving them to freeze to death.

I live in the apartment building directly above where this happened. It was absolutely horrifying, but the best part was seeing how joyful everyone still was. They finished up the sidewalk, sang some songs, and had a good evening. I went down a little later on to thank them for their patience and tolerance in the face of hate and also for brightening up my street so much!! 🏳️‍🌈
